Tombstone Tuesday: Percy HEMSLEY

26 May

Like last weeks photo this is also from my trip to Framfield, Sussex. Percy HEMSLEY was the brother of John HEMSLEY featured last week. Again I know very little about him, because I have barely started researching my HEMSLEY ancestors.

The inscription is also very similar to that on his brother’s gravestone, it reads:

PERCY HEMSLEY,
DIED AUGUST 6TH 1896.
AGE 20.
“AT REST.”

Another one from my visit to Framfield, Sussex. John HEMSLEY was my 3x great uncle, son of my 3x great grandparents Henry and Charlotte HEMSLEY. That is about all I can tell you about him at the moment as I have not done any research into his life yet.

This is one of my photos from last Saturday’s trip to Blackboys and Framfield, Sussex. This was one of the few gravestones at the parish church in Framfield that I was able to connect with straight away, it is for my 3x great grandparents Charlotte and Henry HEMSLEY.

Tombstone Tuesday: Mabel Annie and Ernest Arthur TROWER

28 Apr

Mabel Annie and Ernest Arthur TROWER were brother and sister, my 2x great aunt and uncle. The gravestone tells a sad story of two young people whose lives were cut short. Ernest’s body was never found and he is remembered here at Sayers Common, Sussex and also in Tyne Cot Cemetery, Belgium.

Tombstone Tuesday: George and Lilian Mary MITCHELL

21 Apr

This rather untidy looking grave is that of my great grandparents George and Lilian Mary (BOXALL) MITCHELL, it is located in West Dean burial ground, West Dean, West Sussex.

I took this photo last Saturday during my lunchtime trip to West Dean, and I am rather ashamed at the state of the grave. I have vowed to return and tidy it up, and will post another photo once I have done so.

The inscription reads:

LILIAN MARY MITCHELL BORN 10TH MAY 1877 DIED 1ST DEC 1939

PEACE PERFECT PEACE

ALSO OF HER HUSBAND GEORGE MITCHELL BORN 13TH APRIL 1873 DIED 4TH JANUARY 1951
