It wasn’t just his own or contemporary photographs that survived in the collection of my 2x great-uncle Percy Ebenezer Trower, but older family photographs. This is one such carte de visite that survived, probably dating to a couple of generations before Percy’s.

Sadly unlike Percy’s own photographs there is no name or details on the back of this one, obviously certain clues to the age can be found in the dress, posture and photographer’s name, but that alone would probably not be enough to identify the subject.

There is probably going to be a connection with the Trower family although it might come from his wife’s side of the family. I doubt I will ever know for certain who this woman was.

Percy was born in 1898 and I would guess this photo shows him in his mid to late twenties, so that would date it around the late 1920s, but I could be wrong.

I will have to see if there is anything in his diary about visiting a photographer.

This was taken in July 1950 in Rochester, Kent. Percy described the visit is in his diary:

Tuesday with Doll & Ern went to Rochester, weather came out very bright but windy, it was a good ride, many years since we were there before.

It is very unusual to have an exact date for a photo, it was helped by having a location and a month and year on the back. This coupled with Percy’s diary tells me that the Tuesday in question was the 11th July.

Both women were the daughters of John and Emily Standing. Just to make things a little more complicated another of their daughters, Beatrice Standing, was the second wife of my great-grandfather Henry John Trower.

I believe this photo dates from July/August 1911 and the marriage of their son Henry John Trower to Dorothy May Bateman. I have several other photos which seem to have been taken at the same time including a photo of the wedding group. Ebenezer would have been 45 years old in 1911 and Annie was a couple of years older.

I have always admired Ebenezer’s moustache and if I ever decide to grow a moustache then I would love to have one like his.

It has been a long time since I wrote a Tombstone Tuesday blog post, but yesterday’s newspaper article prompted me to think some more about William Trower and his wife Mary who were the victims of the crime.

Headstone of Mary Trower (1793-1855) Henfield, Sussex, England

This is the headstone for my 4x great-grandmother Mary, the wife of William Trower. The church in the background is St. Peter’s Church in Henfield, Sussex. Mary was buried on the 8th November 1855, her husband died nearly twenty years later and presumably he is buried in the same grave, although his death is not mentioned on the headstone.

The inscription is not particularly clear on the photo or on the actual stone, the lower part of the stone has a quotation which I don’t have a record of, but the top half reads:

SACRED
TO THE MEMORY OF
MARY WIFE OF
WILLIAM TROWER
WHO DIED NOV 3RD 1855
AGED 63 YEARS
