The 70th anniversary of the outbreak of the Second World War

27 Aug

Here in the UK it is hard for genealogists to miss the fact that next week, the 3rd September, sees the 70th anniversary of the start of the Second World War. Here are just a few mentions of the Second World War that may be of interest:

WWII PoW and Roll of Honour records at Ancestry.co.uk – These two new collections have just been released at Ancestry.co.uk, containing details of thousands of British Army personnel held as prisoners and details of those whose died during the war.

BBC Archive Outbreak of War Collection – The excellent BBC Archive features programmes, recordings, documents and pictures from the outbreak of the war, including the famous radio broadcast by Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain. Unfortunately most of the material can only be accessed from the UK.

Outbreak at the Imperial War Museum London – The Imperial War Museum London have a special exhibition (until 6th August 2010) marking the outbreak of the Second World War

Family History Weekend at the Imperial War Museum London – Also at the Imperial War Museum London is a special family history weekend on the 5th and 6th September, featuring talks on various types of records and research.

Ancestors magazine Second World War Special – The current issue (September 2009 Issue 86) of The National Archives Ancestors magazine is packed with articles on the Second World War. I especially liked the article on the Women’s Timber Corps, an organisation which I had never come across before.

These are just some of the mentions that have come to my attention in the last few days, I am sure there are others that I have missed. If you feel there are any I have missed please feel free to let me know. In the meantime I will be looking to see if I can get up to London for the IWM Family History Weekend.
